DESCRIPTION OF RIGGING AND WEIGHT WORK IN 3D GAMES

 

  • Receive the model, check the mesh positions, and proceed
  • Set up joints and name the correct positions (for games, minimize the number of joints for file optimization)
  • Skin Weight: ensure each vertex is skinned to no more than 4 bones, especially in even numbers to avoid heavy files in the game
  • Create controls (Rigging) on the bones and name them appropriately for ease of control by the Animation department
  • Clean up unnecessary nodes (e.g., Arnold, polyhistory) to keep the file lightweight

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF RIGGING AND WEIGHT WORK IN 3D MOVIES

With skills acquired from working on outsourced animation projects for TV commercials, I have gained substantial experience in the Rigging and Weight + Motion department.

  1. Receive the model, check the mesh positions, and proceed
  2. Set up joints and name the correct positions (for movies, more joints help with smoother and more realistic movements)
  3. Skin Weight: a vertex can be attached to multiple bones; the number of weights doesn’t matter
  4. Create controls (Rigging) on the bones and name them appropriately for ease of control by the Animation department
  5. Clean up unnecessary nodes (e.g., Arnold, polyhistory) to keep the file lightweight
